The VRG BIKE ROUTE is the new green highway that connects Northern Europe with Rome, following in the tracks of the ancient Via Romea Germanica. This historical way has been adapted to satisfy the most modern cycle tourists’ needs, offering them a unique travel experience among medieval hill towns and villages, breathtaking landscapes and the rich Italian history and culture.
Cycling along the VRG BIKE ROUTE you will encounter a variety of stunning landscapes. From the majestic Alps with their alpine passes and breathtaking views, the route descends towards the fertile plain of the River Po passing through art cities and mediaeval towns and villages. Heading south, you reach the Apennines with the Casentinesi Forests National Park, an oasis of unspoiled nature. The route comes to an end in the Eternal City of Rome, where history, culture and religion blend into a unique mix, providing you with an unforgettable finale.
The itinerary winds along minor roads with little traffic, allowing you to explore the interior of Italy, often less known, and to plunge yourself into an authentic natural and cultural world. The cycle tourist route has been carefully planned to ensure your safety and comfort, with well-equipped accommodation and catering facilities, as well as repair services all along the route.
The Via Romea Germanica is a pricelessly valuable historical and cultural heritage. This ancient pilgrim walk starts from Saxony on the North Sea and goes through three countries – Germany, Austria and Italy– joining the Brenner Pass to Rome through medieval hill towns and villages, art cities and pristine nature.
With the VRG BIKE ROUTE, our intention has been to acquaint cycling enthusiasts with the true value of this route and make it accessible to them, offering a cycle touring experience that combines adventure, culture, contact with nature and culinary traditions. Cycling along the 1,050 kilometres that go through the six Regions in Italy will give you the opportunity of discovering the hidden beauties of the “Bel Paese” in a sustainable fashion far from the usual cycle touring itineraries.
